My Rescue Story

Day of my rescue

I spent the first year of my life struggling to survive on the streets of Agua Prieta, Mexico.  I was rescued four years ago by Gil Gillenwater, the founder of Poverty’s Pets and Rancho Feliz Charitable Foundation.  Rancho Feliz provides food and housing for the poor of Agua Prieta, Mexico.  The day I was found, Gil was in Agua Prieta  attending a meeting for his foundation. As he was leaving the office, he happened to look down seeing me crouched against the wall of the building.  Emaciated with a horrible case of mange, I looked up at him with  fear in my eyes.  My obvious misery tugging at heart, Gil asked his assistant to grab a blanket and put me in their van. Afraid but too weak to struggle, I allowed him to capture me.  Gil then took me to the local veterinarian to have me euthanized with the compassionate intention of ending my suffering.  Luckily for me, this vet decided to give me a chance.  He phoned Gil two weeks later with the happy news I was still alive.  He asked if someone would be coming to take me home.  The vet reported that with some love and care I would regain my health.  That’s when they christened me Chance!

My foster mom, Kim, drove to Agua Prieta to claim me and take me home with her to Scottsdale.  Kim lovingly nursed me back to health then placed me for adoption on Poverty’s Pets website.  I waited for six months before my “fur-ever” mom and dad, John and Lynn, adopted me to be a playmate for their Lab daughter Molly.  Lynn saw my photo and fell in love with me.  Who wouldn’t?

How handsome I’ve become

We’ve had our challenges over the years as I trained my family.  Molly passed away last April, so I’m now an only dog.  Although I miss my sister, I’m happy to be the center of attention.  I love my daily jaunt with my parents.  One of our favorite places to go is the Horse Lover’s Park.  I also enjoy the dog park but my very favorite thing….just riding in the car with mom and dad!  I will be sharing reviews of all my favorite dog-friendly places on my blog.

I feel as though I’ve won the Dog Lottery. I will be forever grateful to my godfather and benefactor, Gil Gillenwater, for rescuing me as well as my foster mom, Kim, for nursing me back to full health.  I’m blessed to have a mom and dad who love me while taking great care of me.  Don’t tell them I said so, but they spoil me rotten, and I love it!
